This week, students of the Cortes Island Academy l This week, students of the Cortes Island Academy launched back into podcasting. This is the third and final podcasting deep dive of the 2025/26 semester, and culminates with each student producing a complete, feature-length journalistic podcast — interviewed, researched, and edited from start to finish — and then airing it for the world to hear, on Cortes Community Radio, 89.5FM, and worldwide online www.cktz.ca

This week, the students of the Academy rolled up t This week, the students of the Academy rolled up their sleeves for the second podcasting deep dive with instructors Manda Aufochs-Gillespie and Immanuel McKenty. 

During this block each student plans out, researches, scripts and produces a feature length journalistic podcast. 🎤 🎧

Students researched chosen topics, interviewed experts, edited their audio together, layered in background music, created intro and outros, and finally, shared their finished work!

All of the podcasts will be playing on Cortes Community Radio, 89.5FM, CKTZ, and posted on the Cortes Island Academy website. Stay tuned! 

Students also learned about narrative structure, the many (sometimes challenging!) stages of a creative project, interviewed award-winning author Ruth Ozeki about her book A Tale for the Time Being, and celebrated three of the students birthdays! 🎈 🎉

Taking two firings, we had another excellent survival rate, made s’mores, talked about social practice, solutions of storytelling, and stayed warm (enough)! 🔥🪵

Students are diving into a week long podcasting wo Students are diving into a week long podcasting workshop. Students will learn the basics of journalistic podcasting—honing their interview and audio editing skills. Stay tuned for the results! 🎙📣
In the science course, students are exploring the In the science course, students are exploring the complexity of life - examining ecosystem dynamics, relationships, and the many ways humans fit into this web, both positively and negatively. They’re also considering the principle of reciprocity: how we can build more respectful and balanced relationships with nature, guided by the teachings of Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
Students are reading A Tale for the Time Being by Students are reading A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, a story that echoes themes from our other reading, Is a River Alive?, and connects to our semester’s central theme- water. Through this novel, students are exploring ideas of time, interconnectedness, and the ways water links stories, places, and lives across the planet.

This year, students are reading Robert Macfarlane’ This year, students are reading Robert Macfarlane’s Is a River Alive?-- A book that invites us to reconsider our relationship with nature and ask whether a river can be more than a resource, but a living being with its own voice and rights. Students have been engaging in thoughtful discussions, asking big questions, and exploring the idea of more-than-human rights.

Last week was spent on Read Island! Exploring bogs Last week was spent on Read Island! Exploring bogs, learning how to navigate with a compass, harvesting chanterelles, learning to start a fire with flint and steel, many hikes, learning about off grid energy, and playing games with the local kids! It was a blast. Thank you to the Surge Narrows community association, Sheila, Scott, Renate, Suzanne, and Ralph for hosting, transporting and feeding us!
In art this week, our class spent a day in the for In art this week, our class spent a day in the forest, learning about spaces - physical, political, ephemeral - then created Andy Goldsworthy inspired sculptures by the lake. Afterwards, we enjoyed fresh wild mushroom soup along with fruitful art history discussions.
