Fall 2025-2026 Theme: Marine Ecology
Our program is built around a central theme, and for the 2025/2026 semester, we are diving into marine ecology. Through the lenses of marine ecology, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and experiential education, students will explore the interconnectedness of ocean ecosystems.
This semester will feature leading marine scientists from the Hakai Institute, deep ecology educators, and local knowledgeholders. Students will engage with youth climate activists, storytellers, and citizen science initiatives. We will collaborate with local organizations dedicated to coastal resilience and ocean health, as well as our inspiring team of teachers, workshop leaders, and facilitators.
Students in grades 10–12, from Cortes and beyond, are welcome to join this immersive semester, earning 24 credits across courses in Social Studies, Art, English, Science, Outdoor Education, Leadership, and Career Education. Through fieldwork, creative expression, and real-world research, youth will elevate their voices and take action through meaningful projects.

Place-Based Education & Deep Attention
Learn more about the Cortes Island Academy’s focus on place-based learning & hands-on education in this video by Bill Weaver.
In our forest ecology semester in partnership with the Childrens Forest Trust, CIA students did ayajuthem language sessions with Klahoose Elder Jessie Louie. These sessions culminated in the creation of ayajuthem plant name signs, which were installed on the School to Sea trail. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn some of the language of this land.
Our 2025/26 Curriculum:
Our Marine Ecology semester immerses students in hands-on learning, guided by scientists, thought leaders, and the natural world itself. Through a place-based, project-driven curriculum, students will explore marine ecosystems and create impactful projects to share with the community.
